Cherries are picked and depulped the same day. Fermented in open-air concrete tanks for 24-48 hours. Washed again and soaked underwater for another 12-72 hours. Finally coffees are dried on raised beds.

Taste

I have a strong love for washed Kenyan coffees so we must continue on with more juicy  + punchy coffees. This is another bright Kenyan with a citric forward profile containing lots of red and orange fruits. This coffee has plenty of sweetness in the finish as well to round out its punchy top notes. Over days of tasting we experienced notes of blood orange, champagne mango, cranberry, and sweet strawberries.

Region

This Getuya AA separation brings us to another region of Kenya we haven’t entered yet, Muranga. Muranga county sits on the western slope of the Aberdare Mountains around 1850 MASL. The soil is rich and red with a climate that is cooler than most of Kenya. There are many valleys and streams throughout the area, where 80% of the population is reliant on agriculture.

Washing Station

The Getuya Factory is operated by the New Murarandia Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS). The FCS has a total of 3,500 smallholder producer members. Each farmer owns anywhere from ⅕-⅓ of a a hectare of land and delivers cherry to the factory.
